Skincare in the Summer - How You Should Adapt Your Routine

The feeling of the sun kissing your face. The smell of freshly cut grass. The view of a blue sky without a cloud in sight. Summer.

This is the time of year that we step outside and bask in the warmer temperatures. We take a break from our busy routines and pause to enjoy the moment. While the summer months bring relaxation and warm weather, they also bring changes to our skin.

To keep our skin healthy and radiant, the presence of summer means that we too need to implement changes into our skincare routine. At Liliway Holistic Studio, we understand that finding a skincare routine that works for you can be challenging, but with our help you can achieve a radiant complexion that instills confidence from the inside out.

To help you get started, we are sharing five essential summer skincare tips that will keep your skin healthy, vibrant, and beautiful.

How Summer Affects Your Skin

The heat and humidity during the summer season may increase the activity of your sebaceous glands. This could make dry skin appear rough and patchy and cause irritation or make other areas of the skin oilier. In addition, the increase in temperature opens pores, allowing dirt and oil to get trapped in them and cause acne or unwanted blemishes.

Adapting Your Summer Skincare Routine

Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliating rids the skin of dulling debris and dead skin cells, allowing your skin to breathe. This process can help clear out your pores and prevent this debris from clogging your pores and causing breakouts.

Tone Your Face

Toners help to close the open pores on your face, and, because the summer heat opens them up, this is an essential step in your summer skincare routine. If your pores are left open, oil can accumulate here and cause blemishes; however, if you use a natural toner to close these pores the oil will not have anywhere to collect.

Wear Less Makeup

At Liliway Holistic Studio, our goal is to help you feel like you do not need to wear any makeup. You should only wear it because you want to. In the summer, this is especially important because makeup can clog your pores and make it hard for it to breathe.

We suggest that if you still want to wear makeup in the summer, make sure it is light. Try wearing a tinted moisturizer and avoid anything too heavy.

Apply and Reapply Sunscreen

Sunscreen should be the one item you never leave the house without during the summer, but it is not enough to apply just any sunscreen.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing a sunscreen that is broad spectrum. This means that it will protect against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, both of which are harmful to the skin. Additionally, you should choose a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 or higher and water resistant.

Applying once is not enough either. Dermatologists recommend applying sunscreen every two hours, especially if you are spending all day in the sun.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is so important to every function in our bodies, but it is also beneficial for the skin. Drinking plenty of water allows the body to flush toxins out of the skin and helps keep it soft and radiant.

During the summer we lose more water due to sweating through the heat, so remember to stay hydrated.

There are a number of skincare routines you can follow to help keep your skin vibrant and beautiful, but our services and treatments at Liliway Holistic Studio can further help you on your path to wellness.
